A 20 to 30 minute phone call. I call you, or you call me, whichever you prefer.
You tell me about the stressors that have you looking for help, and you ask me anything you want to know about how I work. I’ll also explain what EMDR is and how I use it, so you know from the start what therapy with me looks like.
Sessions are 60 minutes. EMDR sessions run up to 90 minutes.
Adults, 18 and up. I work with women and men.
I’ve worked with adolescents in the past, and I decide case by case. It depends on the issue and on how motivated the teen is to do therapy for themselves.
Mostly, I ask questions. I like to be thorough, and that first hour is how I learn what’s going on in your life and how it’s affecting you day to day.
You can ask me questions too. By the end of the session, I want you to feel heard.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that helps your brain process a painful memory so it stops intruding on your present.
During EMDR, you watch a ball move back and forth across a screen while you think about the memory. You keep the memory, and it stops feeling like it’s still happening.
It starts after we’ve built a working relationship. The first two sessions have no EMDR at all.
Preparation usually begins around sessions three and four, and processing typically starts around session five or six. You decide whether we use it, and if it isn’t helping, we do more talk therapy instead.
Many of my clients have. Some did CBT and still felt like something underneath was never touched.
EMDR is built for that underneath part. Talk therapy continues alongside it, so we keep working on what’s happening in your life today.
For most of my clients, up to about nine months. Some stay longer.
You’ll know you’re getting close to the end when you feel less anxious, think better of yourself, and can talk about what happened without it taking over.
I earned my master’s degree in counseling and psychology from Troy University and my doctoral degree from California Southern University.
After I went into private practice, I took specialized training to become a certified EMDR therapist.
Yes. I’m a licensed mental health counselor in the state of Florida, and I’ve been licensed since 2012.
I think so. I haven’t had any complaints from my clients about my office chairs.
No, you don’t have to lie on a couch, because I don’t have a couch.
I typically don’t wear mascara, but I won’t judge you if you do.
Store-bought Kleenex. No complaints from my clients about the job the tissues do during sessions.
It depends on the question and how comfortable I am answering it.
Garmin for tracking my runs and ABC Trainerize for daily workouts. I also like News 4 Jax to stay abreast of local news in Jacksonville.
I have always been a rock person.
Definitely cats. I like dogs, but they require more time and attention.
If you do virtual work with me, you might get to meet my two cats, Max and Sass.
Your Nerves About Starting Therapy Make Sense
Talking about your stress and trauma with someone new is a scary thing to do, especially the first time.
I’ve sat in the client’s chair more than once myself, so I know how much that first call asks of you.
Call me at (904) 254-8421 or email greatfrontierscs@gmail.com for a free consultation. I’ll explain how EMDR works, and we can talk about the belief you’d most like to change.
